Physical vs. Emotional Trauma
If someone says they’re experiencing back pain after a car accident, no one would doubt that! The impact of a car colliding with another object at a high speed would undoubtedly lead to physical trauma. But what about a divorce? Loss of a loved one? Memories of combat? Feeling unloved/abandoned? Can individuals suffering from a past/current emotional trauma experience back pain that is just as real as the individual who was in a car crash? The answer is yes!
A traumatic memory/emotion triggers the release of peptides, which are not only in our brains but in our muscles and tissues as well. Specifically opioid and opioid-like peptides which play an important role in motivation, emotion, attachment behavior, and the response to stress and pain. This means that our bodies can store emotional information, affecting the physiology of our bodies and leading to conditions such as chronic back pain, headaches, anxiety/depression, and even GI issues.
One effective treatment approach is a specific form of Craniosacral therapy called SomatoEmotional Release (SER). This is a combination of hands-on and talk therapy in which we locate and remove these “cysts” of negative emotions that have been stored in the physical body. The beauty of SER is that even if you’re not ready to fully discuss the details of the emotion/trauma stored in your body, you can choose how far you want the session to go and still experience a decrease in your physical complaints. It has been a very uplifting and powerful experience for many of my patients.
